THE NEIGHBORS

My first job when I moved to New York way back in 1997 was answering phones at an animation studio in midtown called The Ink Tank. It was a fun job, and I met a lot of smart and talented artists, including Laurent Cilluffo. Cilluffo's work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times and lots of other places. He and I worked together on a few small projects.

Around 2000, at his request, I wrote a treatment for a graphic novel. The plot was based around the second place I lived in New York, an illegal sublet on the Upper West Side. Then he moved back to France, and we both more or less forgot about it.

He got in touch with me a few years ago and wanted to turn my old idea into a book. I fleshed out the story, emailed it to him, and Laurent did his usual amazing job with the art. The Neighbors was published in April of 2022 in France. We're working on getting it released in America but, until then, you can check it out on the website of the French publisher or flip through some pages below.
